The palace is reminiscent of the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. Pena Palace is, however, older than the Bavarian castle and many people consider it more beautiful and more characteristic of its time. The castle rises up from the rocky hillside almost like a natural extension of it and the view from the summit is spectacular.
The woods and hillsides around the palace have been carefully landscaped and abound with streams, springs, lakes, ferns, huge exotic trees, cages of rare birds and a variety of animals roaming freely.
The Pena Park is the centre of the area and the best-preserved part of it - a rare example of the natural world being enhanced by human intervention. A walk along the footpaths through the park is an unforgettable experience. Here too, there are esoteric signs and symbols everywhere: traces of alchemists’ ovens, octagonal stone tables and much more.
